You’ve probably heard someone say — or said yourself — one of the following about the church: “I don’t need to go to church to be spiritual” or “Religion is corrupted when it gets organized by humans” or “I was hurt by a church and would never go back.”
There’s no question that there is a smoldering animosity towards “organized religion” by those who have been hurt by it, don’t think they need it, or see hypocrisy written all over it.
With all these negatives, the obvious question arises: wouldn’t it be better to not have such strict denominational structures with powerful church hierarchies and just let people worship as they see fit?
Kevin DeYoung, senior pastor of University Reformed Church in Michigan and author of “Why We Love the Church” will join us in Hour 1 of The Christian Worldview to talk “institutions and organized religion” and whether it’s really necessary anymore.
