Obama For Women’s “Choice.” How Nice. Aborted Baby Has No Choice.
October 27, 2008
Is a candidate’s stance on abortion still a litmus test issue for Christians or must we “move beyond divisive below-the-belt issues (i.e. abortion, same-sex marriage) to others of justice and equality and creation care” as the Emergent Church and liberal Christians say?
Of course, protecting the most defenseless and innocent among us is the issue of justice and equality. Barack Obama may say he’s a Christian but his stance on abortion alone belies that profession. How a Christian could be for a mother’s “right” to kill her unborn or partially-born baby or how any Christian could vote for Obama when there are other pro-life options is, to borrow a Barack-ism, “beyond my pay grade.” Maybe you can watch this video and tell me how a professing Christian rationalizes that one?
Christian Economics v. Obamanomics (video)
October 27, 2008
There is no issue Christians have a greater misunderstanding about – or lack of interest in – than economics. I know because I used to be one of them until I came to realize just how important economics is to almost every aspect of life.
You’ve heard the Christian refrain: “The Bible doesn’t prefer one economic system above another.” “Jesus said, ‘Render to Caesar’ so just pay your taxes.” “Money is the root of all evil.” “The early apostles had all things in common.” “The rich can afford to pay more taxes.” “The disadvantaged should be helped by government.” “Capitalism is based on greed.”
And on and on it goes with a mindless “don’t make me think too deeply about it” mentality or downright misinterpretation of Scripture. But the fact is the Bible is very clear about economic principles. Early in the book of Genesis, God instructed Adam on one foundational economic principle: Read more
Mark Steyn: America at Point of No Return
October 24, 2008

Mark Steyn is one of my favorite politically conservative columnists. I always appreciate those who take a macro view of what’s taking place rather than those who get lost in the minutiae. I included a few paragraphs from his most recent column, “Obama Nears ‘Now What’ Moment.” I thought it fit in well with the topic on the radio show this weekend – “Are American Values Christian Values?” – because the values of our country are changing right before our eyes. Are American Values Christian Values?

It has been traditionally believed that American values are similar to Christian values. Founding principles like life, liberty, limited government, and freedom of speech and religion are enshrined in our founding documents and have much crossover with Biblical principles.
But can we assume that current American values are still Christian values? Can we assume that every American citizen and even those who seek to be political leaders hold these values? Read more

Piper, Anderson, Pagitt, and Boyd Agree! … on almost nothing
October 22, 2008
Having been born, raised, and still living in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, I was quite interested to read today’s feature column in Christianity Today’s e-newsletter entitled, “Fire and Nice: Minnesota’s Twin Cities are home to a feisty collection of influential churches.”
Internationally influential pastors and churches such as John Piper of Bethlehem Baptist, Tony Jones and Doug Pagitt of Solomon’s Porch, Leith Anderson of Wooddale Church, and Greg Boyd of Woodland Hills all call the Twin Cities home.
They may share a metro area, but they certainly don’t share a unified theology. While Piper and Anderson (who is also the president of the National Association of Evangelicals) are in similar ballparks theologically, Pagitt (emergent – i.e. post-modern church) and Boyd (open theist – i.e. God doesn’t know future) are playing on a very different field, so to speak.
Take, for example, each of their responses to the Interstate 35W bridge collapse Read more
Must Evangelicals Dirty Their Hands In Politics – Part 2
October 22, 2008
[Continued from last week. If you missed Part 1, you can read it here.]
Suddenly, politics didn’t seem so “this worldly” to me any more. I started to make the heavenly connections and began to see how politics was really an important means to an end – God’s end – in this case, the protection of innocent human life.
I thought, “What were Christians doing leading up to that awful Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision in 1973?” Someone had obviously been asleep at the switch. As Edmund Burke rightly observed, “All it takes for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.” Now the damage of Roe v. Wade had to be undone. Sure, prayer would be needed and changed hearts would be nice; that’s where the gospel comes in. But, ultimately, it would take political action to accomplish the task. Read more
Mysticism on the March…All in the Name of “Unity”
October 21, 2008
Here is an excellent article by Pastor Ken Silva on “Contemplative Spirituality/Mysticism as Common Ground.” It addresses the unbiblical spiritual practices that are fueling the surge towards unity between professing Christians and other religious faiths. So-called Evangelicals like Tony Campolo, Brian McClaren, and Richard Foster are three of the headliners leading the charge. If you ever wonder how the world’s peoples and religions will unite under the Antichrist and his religious leader, the False Prophet, a la Revelation 13, here is your answer. The first two paragraphs:
This piece from Apprising Ministries is designed to give you a little better understanding as to why “Progressive Christians” ala Marcus Borg or “Progressive Evangelicals” ala Tony Campolo or quasi-Christians involved with the Emerging Church like Guru Brian McLaren and Roshi Richard Foster are all excited about meditation pow wows with other “faith traditions” aka interspiritual “dialogues.” Here you’ll see from the words of those involved with antibiblical Contemplative/Centering Prayer (CCP), which is truly transcendental meditation-lite for the Christian, that they are coming to believe God is working even within these other world religions.
Essentially we’re witnessing a reimagined version of liberalism’s ficticious Fatherhood of God, Brotherhood of Man, and social reform of whatever neighborhood you live in; it is a new form of liberalism, a postliberalism. But the real role of the actual Body of Christ has exactly zero to do with the bringing together of the world’s religions for the LORD God Almighty of the Bible. As I’ve said before you may find the following a little bit startling because this uniting of religions does happen to be the goal of the god of this age; at least for a time. Which brings us full circle to the vehicle with which Satan will eventually temporarily accomplish his unity among religions—Mystical Encounters.
When spiritual experiences are the basis for unity rather than the clear teaching of the Word of God, truth is compromised in a hurry and gross error is sure to follow.
The Informed and Discerning Christian
October 21, 2008
When I was growing up, my mother would tell me to do something that she still does every day: “Read the Bible and then the newspaper.” In other words, be an informed and discerning Christian.
I believe it’s important for Christians to be informed about what’s going on in the world for several reasons: 1.) so we can discern the times leading up to the return of Christ, 2.) so we are able to help others see all of life through a Biblical perspective, and 3.) so we can be more like Christ or Paul, who were very informed and discerning on the issues of their day.
So while the following stories compiled today by my friends at Salem Radio Network aren’t overtly “Christian”, they are useful for our understanding of the times. Read more
